How many airports does Frankfurt am Main have?

If you ever had to book a flight from or to Frankfurt, you are probably aware how confusing the Airport situation in Frankfurt can be with the two Airports namely “Frankfurt Airport” (FRA) and “Frankfurt-Hahn Airport” (HHN).

Situated in on the outskirts of Frankfurt lies the busiest airport in Germany and the 4th airport in Europe after London Heathrow, Paris-Charles de Gaulle and Amsterdam Schiphol.

The Frankfurt Airport (FRA) is very well connected to the city by Bus, Train (S-Bahn), Cab and in some cases even shuttle service.

It has 2 Terminals with a 3th one being built as of the time I’m writing this. Additional there a great number of Hotels in proximity around and even a few with direct connection to the Terminals.

It also employs a host of restaurants and Bars; short and long-distance Bus stops as well as a regional train station and International Train station for the likes of the ICE and the TGV for example.

Frankfurt Airport (FRA) is also direly connected to the A3 which is one of the most important highways in Germany and with a length of 769 km it stretches from the border on the Netherlands until the Borders of Austria.

Frankfurt Airport (FRA) which serves as the Primary Passenger hub in Germany is simultaneously the biggest Cargo Airport in Germany as well.

Around 120 Kilometres away from Frankfurt lies the Frankfurt-Hahn Airport (HHN). When Ryanair started to incorporate Frankfurt-Hahn Airport (HHN) into their flight Plans, they requested to change the Name officially from Hahn Airport to Frankfurt-Hahn Airport. The German aerospace company “Lufthansa” has since then tried to appeal the name Change, citing false advertising. Nevertheless, Ryanair got to keep the name but must sight the distance to Frankfurt am Main in their advertising.

Frankfurt-Hahn Airport (HHN) is a big Hub for low price Airlines and a major cargo airport since it has, other than Frankfurt Airport (FRA), a 24-hour operating license.

Frankfurt-Hahn Airport (HHN) consist of two Passenger Terminals and one Cargo Terminal. It supports several restaurants and shops.

The closet local train station is 20 kilometres away in Traben-Trarbach, the closest long-distance train stations lies in Bullay (15 Kilometres).

The nearest Highways are approximately 40 Kilometres away with the A1 to the west or the A6 to the east. Parking and car rental are available at the Airport.

Frankfurt-Hahn Airport (HHN) is also served by several private companies running transportation to Frankfurt am Main (ca. 105 minutes), Cologne (ca. 135 minutes) Luxembourg (ca. 105 minutes) and several other German cities and cities in the region.

In conclusion it can be said that even though flights from Frankfurt-Hahn Airport (HHN) can be cheaper due to lower cost for the Airplane companies, additional cost for the longer transportation should be kept in mind.

Also, when traveling to Frankfurt-Hahn Airport (HHN) transportation should be sorted out before starting your journey, since It can get very expensive to take a cab or similar services straight from the Airport.

If your Journey takes you to the city of Frankfurt am Main, the easier way to go will be in most cases the airport connected straight to the city Frankfurt Airport (FRA)
