Frankfurts museum embankment

The city of Frankfurt is not only known for its banks, but also for the variety of museums and galleries. City of business and arts, Frankfurt am Main welcomes every year over 2 million people to visit its 60 exhibition Centers.

Frankfurt’s Museum Riverbank is one of the most important locations for museums not only in Germany, but also in Europe.

Every year, two big cultural events take place: the “night of museums” and the “Museum Riverbank festival”.

Cultural life in Frankfurt does not exclude any age or art preference: the city has something for everyone

The embankment to the south of the Main River is called the Museum embankment or (Museumsufer) in German due to its large concentration of museums. Frankfurt is a city rich in history, so naturally there is lots to discover.

The strip stretches for about 1,6 kilometres between the “Fridensbrücke” (Peace bridge) and the “Alte Brücke” (old bridge).

Walking along the river side you will have a stunning few of the skyline of Frankfurt, on a sunny day you might want to have a picknick in the park next to the river.

Additionally, you will find an extensive flee market stretching on for over a kilometre, inviting you to discover all sorts of treasures. And then then there are the museums of course.

I picked some examples, to give you an overview if you want a comprehensive overview of all the museums in Frankfurt, I suggest the official website of the city of Frankfurt:

Liebiegshaus

Originally build as a retirement home for the Bohemian textile manufacturer Baron Heinrich von Liebieg, the city of Frankfurt acquired the building in 1908 and devoted it to a sculpture collection.

The museum shows artwork from different areas and places, such as Greek, Roman, Egyptian as well as Medieval, Baroque and renaissance pieces with no particular link to Frankfurt or its history.

The garden around the museum itself is worth a visit on its own and can be used for picknicks completely free.
